Timothy Smith (Lens Cap Tim) is a photographer from Chicago, IL. He is also a musician and plays guitar for the band Hot Dang.

I have known Tim for several years now. I’ve followed his music and photography for a long time. I admire his art.

We met a couple of times to do landscape photography in the past and I always gained very valuable information regarding techniques and camera settings. The results from those meetings helped me achieve great photos.

Recently, I took notice of his portrait photography. The artistic approach and an eye for different lighting arrangements give his portraits a unique style.

My curiosity and hunger for knowledge on the subject of portraits led me to contact him and get an insight at his process. We agreed to meet and he welcomed me with great hospitality. The model for this session was Katie M.

With much enjoyable conversation and great music playing in the background, the work of capturing the frames began with ease and comfort. Every now and then I would inquire about the camera settings and lighting set up, being careful not to disturb the mood.

Witnessing Tim get into the zone as he progressed through the photoshoot and Katie being professional and very natural for the camera was inspiring to see. For me, only having had experience making photos at concerts and random street photography, this was an opportunity, an important moment to gain information in the process of making portraits.
